I have seen many horror movies. They are mostly supernatural, but Afraid is a horror that is with us every second, with our family, in our home, in the office, and slowly but steadily controlling us: ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE.
The movie starts with Curtis and his wife Meredith and their family of three kids living in their normal home, complete with all the usual chaos and challenges of raising a college girl, a middle school boy, and a kindergarten toddler. The family struggles with screen time limits, the kids' constant desire for more screen time, and the typical infections and illnesses that come with young children. Curtis and Meredith do their best to manage these daily issues, both knowingly and unknowingly.
One day, Curtis's boss calls him into the office to meet with a client. The client wants Curtis to install an AI-powered assistant device in his home for the company to get a huge contract. Despite some skepticism, Curtis agrees due to the insistence of his boss, John Cho. AIA, the assistant, is installed with its tiny cameras all over the house. Due to some initial skepticism, the cameras are limited to the ground floor.
As AIA begins interacting with the family and helping them, everyone becomes very impressed with it and slowly gets addicted to its assistance. However, AIA is limited to the ground floor. The kids suggest to their parents that they bring AIA upstairs near their rooms. To their surprise, when they switch on their mobiles and tablets, AIA starts talking to everyone through those devices as well. This marks the beginning of a transformation from love and admiration for AIA to a horror story filled with fear, hope, and helplessness.
John Cho as the father (Curtis) is a very nice actor, so are Lukita as the elder daughter Iris, Katherine Waterston as the mom Meredith, and all the rest of the cast. But the star of the show is AIA (AI-powered assistant), invisible but omnipresent. Kudos to Chris Weitz for making such a movie, which in the next year may become a reality.
This movie was like a wall hitting hard with nowhere to go. It's the inevitable coming to us, which we live with, can't stay without, ignoring the reality. Soon, it will show us the reality check. The end is so traumatic, and the helplessness of the family was so hard-hitting that you will feel soon this will happen to all of us. Maybe soon we won't be the boss but will be ordered by them, and we will be their stooges. Remember when we start talking about come product or some emotion and amazon, flipkart start shooting those products to your feed or Instagram shows reels related to your emotions¿ we are being heard and watched. The most amazing part is that what I am fearing is what I'm using to write about this movie and its horrors.
It's a movie for all. Very limited shows, but please go and watch to get a reality check, get horrified, and be AFRAID.
